Orthopaedic and Sport Injury Research

About Us

OASIR group is the result of a collaboration between the Orthopaedic Department in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and researchers from the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences in The School of Life Sciences at Northumbria University.

The group has weekly research seminars held on Friday lunch times at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital which are attended by a wide variety of staff and guests. During these seminars, the team discuss advancements in research, they identify areas of further development and they pioneer innovative ideas for new projects.

Our main interest is research around the hip, knee and ankle joint with special interest in the patello-femoral joint. The team principally investigate the effect of lower limb orthopaedic interventions examining in particular the clinical biomechanical, neuromuscular, electrophysiological and psychological effects of these interventions. Our aims are to perform cutting edge integrative orthopaedic research and technology development and to build a scientific team that can help in answering many clinical and non-clinical questions in the field of orthopaedics and sport science.

The effects of different treatment protocols and rehabilitation on lower limb musculotendinous pathology will be examined utilising the wide spectrum of skills and specialities within the team. This will inform and give rise to a dynamic and evidence based practice. Mr Kader, the Clinical Director of OASIR, is a knee surgeon with a specialist interest in patello-femoral joint surgery. He has developed expertise in this field by visiting leading surgeons in patella surgery in this country and abroad.
This specific interest had provided the inspiration for a series of studies which will answer clinically important questions about the patello-femoral joint. A dedicated patello-femoral clinic has been implemented at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for the advanced assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of patello-femoral conditions. This patello-femoral clinic will play a pivotal role in generating ideas and data for patello-femoral research.
